When a person in South Carolina is involved in a wreck or stopped by an officer for some other purpose, they may end up being questioned about any potential alcohol consumption. This line of questioning may lead to them being asked to participate in field sobriety tests and maybe even a blood or breath test to objectively measure their blood alcohol content.
At every step of the way during a drunk driving investigation and arrest, it is important for drivers to remember that they always have the right to defend themselves and prove their innocence. The case of one woman in South Carolina is a good example of this.
Earlier this year, the woman was involved in a motor vehicle accident that left another man dead. Reports indicate that the woman was driving and made a turn in front of a man who was riding a motorcycle. It is not clear which person had the right of way but the man on the motorcycle died as a result of his injuries. The woman was asked to participate in field sobriety tests which officers said she failed and they charged her with driving under the influence. Now, however, chemical tests show that she was not drunk or impaired by drugs and the DUI charge has been dropped.
Situations like this highlight the importance of working to protect one’s rights at all time. After an arrest, it may be helpful for people to make an appointment with a lawyer to learn how they can do this.
