If you or someone you know has been sentenced to time in a prison in South Carolina, you will no doubt want to understand what type of personal rights they may lose and what rights they may retain. Regardless of the reason that a person is ordered to spend time in prison, that person is still a person and deserves some basic respect as a human being.
To date, people in jails and prisons have had access to cell phones. This, however, has created some controversy as many assert that the ability for inmates to communicate with persons outside of the prison may increase the risk of riots or of banned items being brought into these facilities. Many have lobbied for stricter controls but nothing has yet been implemented statewide.
As reported by ABC News 4, a technology-based system was to be installed and tested at Lee Correctional Institution. The purpose of this system is to detect drones that might be carrying items into a prison or to jam cell phone lines to limit inmates’ abilities to communicate externally. The wireless industry organization, CTIA, has reportedly been against such actions but now is said to be in full support of measures designed to limit the communication abilities of people in prisons.
