PROSECUTORS DISMISS ALL CHARGES AGAINST CHANTRELL ROSS DURING TRIAL

CHESTERFIELD, S.C. — Today, prosecutors voluntarily dismissed all criminal charges against Chantrell Ross during trial in Chesterfield County.

The prosecution ended the case while still presenting its evidence, before the defense called a single witness.

Ross was represented by Rose Mary Parham and Shipp Daniel of The Parham Law Firm.

Following the dismissal, the Honorable Clifton Newman polled the jurors and asked how they would have voted based solely on the evidence they had heard. Every juror indicated that he or she would have returned a verdict of not guilty.

Ross had been charged with involuntary manslaughter and violations of South Carolina’s Dangerous Animals Act arising from the death of Scottie Brigman.

Throughout the trial, the defense maintained that the State failed to present evidence establishing essential elements of the charged offenses. The defense argued that the State failed to prove the alleged attack was unprovoked, failed to scientifically identify Ross’s dogs as the animals responsible for Brigman’s fatal injuries, and left critical questions unanswered.

“For more than four years, Chantrell waited for his day in court,” said attorney Shipp Daniel of The Parham Law Firm. “When that day finally arrived, the evidence simply wasn’t there. Our justice system requires proof beyond a reasonable doubt before someone’s liberty can be taken. That burden was never met. We are grateful that Chantrell finally received justice not only for himself, but for the family who stood beside him throughout four incredibly difficult years.”

Ross expressed tremendous relief following the dismissal and is grateful to finally move forward after four years of uncertainty. His family, who stood beside him throughout the prosecution, likewise welcomed the outcome and the opportunity to put this chapter behind them.

The State was represented by Deputy Solicitor Kernard Redmond and Assistant Solicitor J.T. Baxley of the Fourth Circuit Solicitor’s Office. The investigation was conducted by the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
